Mitsubishi Electric Vehicles News
In 2009, Mitsubishi introduced its i-MiEV electric vehicle (EV). It was the first highway-capable EV in the world. In 2012, Mitsubishi released the next generation under the Mitsubishi “i” nameplate in the United States. The Mitsubishi i was so incredible that the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy gave it its Greenest Vehicle of the Year award.
For decades, Mitsubishi has been at the forefront of developing emissions-reducing technologies and continues innovating in the hybrid EV segment. This article explores current Mitsubishi hybrid vehicles and the future of Mitsubishi EVs.

2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid was the world’s first SUV and quickly garnered awards. Today, the all-new 2024 Outlander plug-in hybrid has audaciously elegant features and cutting-edge technology across all six trims. Its bold exterior with horizontal accents and chiseled lines announces its athleticism.
2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid Interior
Inside, you’ll enjoy sophisticated touches and thoughtful technologies to enhance your comfort and driving experience. Base trims have premium cloth upholstery, while middle-tier Outlanders upgrade to synthetic leather. Top-of-the-range trims come with semi-aniline leather-appointed seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and soft-touch materials that deliver a premium look and feel throughout the cabin.
Adding the massage function to the front seats will make even the longest road trips comfortable. Front seats heat on higher trims, and the top-tier SEL has heated rear seats. The Outlander also features a tri-zone climate control system to adjust temperatures throughout the cabin.
In-vehicle technology runs on an 8- or 9-inch touch screen, depending on the trim. Smartphone linking technology, such as Android Auto, lets you sync your cell phone to your infotainment system so you can stream your music, access your favorite apps, make calls, and more. Other convenience features include wireless phone charging, a head-up display, remote keyless entry, and push button start.
Outlander plug-in hybrids are versatile thanks to their customizable seating that adjusts to meet cargo or passenger needs. This three-row SUV seats up to seven passengers in spacious comfort. If you need to haul gear, folding the second and third rows opens up 64.7 cubic feet of cargo area. A hands-free power programmable liftgate provides easy access to the cargo hold.
2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid Performance
Under the hood, you’ll find Mitsubishi’s 2.4-liter MIVEC four-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and 16 valves. This engine produces 131 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque.
Dual electric motors provide additional power. An 85 kW electric motor and a single-speed drive mode switchable reduction gearbox deliver power to the front wheels. A 100 kW electric motor and a single-speed fixed reduction gearbox send power to the rear axle. These two electric motors boost the Outlander plug-in hybrid to 248 combined system horsepower.
The Outlander plug-in hybrid boasts a 420-mile total driving range. You can switch to a series hybrid system that uses the gas-powered engine to recharge the battery while delivering power to the electric motors for additional speed.
Cruising the highways with the Outlander plug-in hybrid’s parallel hybrid system provides optimal efficiency. The 2.4-liter gas engine does most of the work of driving the front wheels with some help from the twin electric motors. Any excess electricity gets returned to the battery.
There are four drive modes to choose from: normal mode, which harmonizes the gas and electric power, and EV mode, which shuts the gas engine off and allows you to travel up to 38 miles using only electricity from the lithium-ion battery. On average, Americans commute 41 miles a day to and from work. That means that if most Americans drove the Outlander plug-in hybrid in EV mode, they’d never have to stop for gas again.
2024 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Plug-In Hybrid
Mitsubishi’s Eclipse Cross plug-in hybrid is only available outside the U.S.. Still, it’s only a matter of time before they roll out this popular international plug-in hybrid stateside. The Eclipse Cross plug-in hybrid comes in three stylish trims that we anticipate will translate similarly to the U.S. release.
Eclipse Cross Plug-In Hybrid ES Trim
The ES trim uses twin electric motors powered by a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine to drive the vehicle. This powertrain is set up like the Outlander plug-in hybrid. It also utilizes regenerative braking and offers multiple charging options for faster results.
We expect the all-wheel-drive system to use Mitsubishi’s impressive Super All-Wheel-Control technology for exceptional handling over various road surfaces and weather conditions. Future models might include a touchscreen larger than the 8-inch version currently used, but we expect the same Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
Driver-assist systems on the base ES trim include forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, and a rearview camera with rear parking sensors.
Eclipse Cross Plug-In Hybrid Aspire Trim
The Aspire trim will have all the features found on the ES, with some notable upgrades. For example, the Aspire has a 1500-watt vehicle-to-load (V2L) power supply, a relatively new feature for EVs. A V2L system turns your plug-in hybrid into a power source for equipment, such as a generator or television. You can even use a V2L to recharge another EV.
The Aspire trim also adds adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, lane change assist, and a Multi Around Monitor suite to its driver-assist technologies. We also expect enhancements to interior comfort features, such as heated front seats.
Eclipse Cross Plug-In Hybrid Exceed Trim
We anticipate the Exceed trim to include all the features of the Aspire trim, plus a few enhancements. For instance, the driver-assist suite might add Mitsubishi’s Ultrasonic misacceleration Mitigation System, which reduces the chance and severity of hitting obstacles at close range if the driver mistakenly hits the gas pedal.
Like most top-tier trim levels, the Exceed has comfort features such as a heated steering wheel and leather upholstery in various colors and styles. Technology upgrades are also expected, such as a head-up display, a moonroof, and a hands-free power liftgate.
