Since its debut in 2003, the Mitsubishi Outlander has been a popular choice in the compact crossover SUV market. The introduction of available third-row seats in 2007 made it more attractive to growing families, and in 2014 the third row became a standard feature. A groundbreaking event in 2018 was the release of the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SUV in America, one of the first SUVs to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

With its powerful performance, smooth ride, and spacious cabin with seating for seven, the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid is a great choice for Florida drivers. Its compact size makes it easy to navigate the city streets, while standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and generous ground clearance give it off-road capability. Here at Firkins Mitsubishi in Bradenton, Florida, we look at the evolution of the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid and the benefits of buying this SUV.

Does It Apply for the Tax Credit as an EV?

Yes, the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid qualifies for federal tax credits. As of April 2024, federal tax credits are available for both new and pre-owned plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles. The tax credit amount can be up to $7,500 for new vehicles, depending on the battery capacity and other factors. To qualify, you must meet certain criteria:

  1. It must be assembled in North America.
  2. The MSRP must not exceed $80,000 for SUVs like the Outlander PHEV.
  3. At least 50% of the vehicle’s battery components must be produced or assembled in North America.
  4. At least 40% of critical minerals used in the battery must be extracted or processed in the U.S. or in a country with a U.S. free-trade agreement.

It’s important to note that the actual credit amount you receive may depend on your tax liability.

Average Charge Time of Recent Models

You have flexible charging options for the Outlander. You can use a regular 120-volt household outlet at your home for Level 1 charging. This takes up to 16 hours to fully charge the vehicle, making it useful for topping up the battery overnight. Using a home-installed or public Level 2 charger, you can fully charge the SUV in only 6.5 hours.

The Outlander SEL has Level 3 DC fast charging capability and can be charged from low to 80% in approximately 38 minutes at a public fast-charging station. These charging features contribute to the convenience and efficiency of owning an Outlander Plug-in Hybrid. If most of your trips are around town, with 38 miles of electric-only range, your stops at the gas station will be few and far between.

Common Features of the Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle Over the Years

The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid has evolved and improved, and while it’s always been an exemplary SUV, the current generation is way ahead of its predecessors.

On its release in 2018, the revolutionary Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SUV was offered in SEL and GT trims. Powering them was a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, one on each axle, for a 197-horsepower total system output. The 12 kWh battery pack provided up to 22 miles of electric-only range. This model had to forgo the third-row seating to facilitate the plug-in hybrid technology.

Standard features included a power liftgate, keyless entry, push-button start, leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a rearview camera. The infotainment system included a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, and voice control. The GT offered LED headlights, a multiview camera, and two household AC power outlets.

Standard driver-assistance technology included a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic warning. The GT added adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. In 2020, most of these advanced driver aids and an 8-inch infotainment touch screen became standard on the base model. In the 2021 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, a new battery pack gave it an all-electric range of 24 miles, and the system output increased to 221 horsepower.
