Mitsubishi Works To Standardize EV Home Charging Stations

Mitsubishi will soon produce the Mitsubishi i EV in the US, is working on an EV charging stations a standard accessory in all homes. But Mitsubishi isn't doing this alone. They are teaming up with Nissan to possibly "jointly develop a unified standard for technology that powers households using the li-ion battery pack from an EV." 1

The technology already exists; adapters from both Nissan and Mitsubishi vehicles that convert battery pack DC current to AC power - so you can use any left over electricity (after the car is fully charged) as back up energy for your home.

This idea comes after the tsunami and earthquake earlier this year, which devastated parts of Japan and left hundreds of thousands without power. Making use of EV's li-ion battery packs as energy sources for homes has grown from a small theory into a widely popular idea.

Mitsubishi has already unveiled adapters that convert DC current (for car batteries) into AC power to run home appliances, including refrigerators and air conditioners. This system can "power a typical Japanese household for around two days."2

Stay tuned for more EV news from Japan, and test drive any of our great vehicles at Firkins Mitsubishi in Bradenton.
